Riggs Pens began about 2 years ago when Mike Riggs decided to turn his creative juices toward pen making. Like most pen makers, his first pens were made using components purchased as “kits”. Right from the beginning Mike only used the highest quality woods so his pens were pretty…but there was a problem. It became clear that true fountain pen lovers are not interested in “kit pens”. At that point he began designing his own style of fountain pen.
Mike’s inexperience turned out to be a benefit as he was not influenced by anyone else’s style. What developed was an elegant, well balanced and beautiful pen.
When you first hold a Riggs Pens writing instrument you will be struck by how light weight they are. Wood tends to look heavy (it’s a psychological thing), but his pens are quite nimble and a pleasure to write with.
Mike’s main focus is the wood. The natural beauty of wood with it’s many colors and patterned grain serve as a lovely palate from which he endeavors to create functional works of art. Mike’s selection of acrylics accents the wood while at the same time melds with it.
You can view a vast collection of Riggs Pens hand-made writing instruments at The Baltimore/Washington International Pen Show 2023.
