Italic script is still considered by many calligraphers & typographers to be a “perfect script” thanks in part to its flowing lines and readability. Join Nik Pang to learn the history, forms, and execution of creating classic (and perhaps a few contemporary) Italic hands.

10:00 AM – 12:00 PM Zentangles with Jessica Davies
The Zentangle Method® is an easy-to-learn, fun and relaxing way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. Almost anyone can use it to create stunning, non-representational art. It increases focus and creativity and provides artistic satisfaction, along with an increased sense of personal well-being. This workshop provides beginners with a background in the history of Zentangle, introduces them to the basic steps of the method and exposes them to associated vocabulary and tools. Students will be immersed in creating actual Zentangle art during this 2-hour class. Jessica will also demonstrate how to use your beautiful inks and fountain pens to create stunning images.
Jessica Davies is a Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT) who teaches at The Queen’s Ink in Savage, Maryland.

Drawing city life that captures everything from people to buildings doesn’t have to be difficult! The Urban Sketchers Baltimore team offers a demonstration on how to establish scale using common building components; the importance of including entourage (people, vehicles, signage, etc.); and how to avoid overthinking while sketching. They’ll show how different hatching techniques can build tone and dimension to sketches. Through example and practice, participants will be using hatching, cross-hatching, scribble-hatching and more to add more layers to their sketches. Bring a sketchpad and favorite tools for sketching.

Copperplate calligraphy, also known as roundhand, engrosser’s, and engraver’s script, is considered by most to be the mother of all pointed pen hands. Renowned calligrapher Nikola Pang will discuss the history of this calligraphic style and show you how to use dip pens in order to form the basic strokes of its construction.

Do you struggle with managing your pen and ink collections, whether using analog or digital tools? After multiple requests from pen friends, Rachel Crawford will be sharing her ultra-portable methods of cataloging inks, as well as her method of cataloging pens. Learn how she sets up her ink notebooks, plus how she set up and maintains an easy-to-use database that can be accessed anywhere.

Founded in 1838 as a manufacturer of paints, inks, and dyes, Pelikan went through a series of product line changes until it presented the world with the first piston filler fountain pen in 1929. The basic concept has remained the same for over 90 years with few changes. Learn more about Pelikan’s pre-World War II history and examine the actual pens from this era from instructor Tom Baley’s personal collection. Free with paid show admission.
