Pictorial trademark of 1922 O. H. W. Hadank's design strongly promotes the Pelikan trademark - simplified graphics in a composed framing. For the first time, and along the lines of the aesthetics of modern advertisement, the stricter composition lays the foundation for a distinctive trademark that will brand itself on the consumer's memory. In contrast, the original focus on Christianity receded.

Small Honey Paints It was Günther Wagner himself who, based on his family coat of arms, designed the the PELIKAN pictorial trademark for the “Small Honey Paints”. Honey paints were a type of watercolor, common at the time, in which honey was used as a binder. According to an 1873 price list, small round pans of honey paint were offered in boxes containing 12, 18 or 24 different colors.

Brand registration on November 27, 1878 The pelican with its four chicks, is one of the oldest trademark registrations in Germany. It was only by the Trademark Protection Act of 1874 that was in effect throughout the German Empire, that Günther Wagner was able to secure the monopoly right for the earlier developed Pelikan pictorial trademark.

1st Poster competition The first poster competition of 1889/99 is a resounding success for the company Günther Wagner. Despite the provisions concerning measurements and texts that were to be used, over 500 designs were submitted. After awarding the prizes and declaring recommendations for acquisition, approximately 200 artworks were presented in a traveling exhibition, among other cities, in Hanover, Berlin, Vienna and Zurich.

Carl Hornemann's first ink factory In 1832 chemist Carl Hornemann founded his own colour and ink factory in Hanover Germany. Here at Pelikan though we tend to consider the 28th of April 1838 as the founding date, as it was the date on the very first price list. All company anniversaries are therefore based on this date.

Founded in 1838 as a manufacturer of paints, inks, and dyes, Pelikan underwent a series of product line changes until it presented the world with the first piston filler fountain pen in 1929. However, the basic concept has remained unchanged for over 90 years with few changes.

About Tom Baley:
Tom Baley’s great aunt taught him to use fountain pens in the late 1950s and gave him a Scheaffer school pen. He bought his first fountain pen in the fall of 1966, became an avid accumulator (undisciplined collector), stopped collecting for 25 years to raise three boys, resumed collecting with several focuses, always narrowing the emphasis, eventually to Pelikans, both vintage and new. Several years ago he founded The Pen Man.

Don’t miss this fascinating seminar about Pelikan’s pre-World War II history with Tom Baley. He is an expert on the history of Pelikan Pens, Germany, and will bring around 500 vintage pens for this special event.
